Nota d'usoI verbi to treble e to triple sono sinonimi e significano “moltiplicare per tre”: Fees will treble ( o triple) in the New Year, le tasse triplicheranno con il nuovo anno. Però come aggettivi e sostantivi ( treble è anche avverbio) treble e triple hanno una diversa sfumatura di significato; tradizionalmente treble si usava in riferimento a ciò che si era triplicato, mentre triple si usava per indicare ciò che consisteva di tre parti: He sold the house for treble its price, vendette la casa per il triplo del suo prezzo; the triple jump, un salto triplo. Però si tratta di una distinzione spesso ignorata. È inoltre importante notare che, nonostante anche triple venga utilizzato nel linguaggio musicale, per dire “soprano” in ambito musicale si usa esclusivamente treble: treble recorders, flauti soprano; treble clef, chiave di soprano. -
